GIWA FARM RESETTLEMENT IDP CAMP – SHALOM PRIMARY SCHOOL
Located in the Rongai District, Kenya, the GIWA Farm Resettlement IDP Camp has a population of approximately 3,180 people across 530 households. Households are allocated approximately 2.25 acres of land, and the community is growing quickly. Agriculture is the main source of income in the community, with many households relying on livestock and crop farming.
KIDS has partnered with the GIWA Farm Resettlement IDP Camp across several programs, working mostly with the Shalom Primary School. Prior to 2014, KIDS provided funding for classroom supplies, including tables and chairs for 150 students, and over 300 textbooks. Between 2014 - 2016, KIDS also supplied 8 toilet blocks, sporting materials, and more textbooks to over 500 students.
In 2018 - 2019, KIDS supported the Food Security Project at the school. This harvest project helped cover start-up costs for fertilizer and seeds to provide food for the students and their families, reducing the costs associated with attending school. The program saw several successful, sustainable, harvests before it was halted due to the government shut-down of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In the coming years, KIDS plans to provide support to restart the harvest project and ensure that students have sustainable access to healthy food.
Through these projects with the Shalom Primary School, KIDS Initiative helped the community work towards fulfilling 3 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: #2 Zero Hunger, #4 Quality Education and #6 Clean Water and Sanitation.
