The work that KIDS does is entirely supported by volunteers - from our website, to the social media posts, to even our Board of Directors, every person involved is donating their time and skills to develop sustainable solutions. In the coming months, we will be featuring some of these amazing volunteers!
Maureen joined the Marketing and Communications Committee in March of 2020. She currently works as the team’s Social Media Coordinator - if you follow KIDS on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter, you will have seen her work! Read on to find out why Marueen continues to volunteer with KIDS, and to learn a little more about who she is.
Why did you decide to volunteer at KIDS?
I decided to join KIDS Initiative during the peak of quarantine in 2020 because I needed something to be inspired about, and what better way than by helping others. I have always enjoyed volunteering and gaining new exciting experiences, so when I came across KIDS Initiative’s ad I was very excited to be a part of such an awesome organization.
What do you like best about volunteering?
My favourite part of volunteering for KIDS Initiative is understanding that what I do can help make a real difference and impact someone’s life. To me, I think that is what life is all about and what I really strive to achieve in my personal and professional life.
What motivates you to stay involved with KIDS?
What motivates me to continue volunteering with KIDS Initiative for almost 2 years now is that I really do enjoy the work I do. My role is to create content for all the KIDS Initiative social media accounts, month after month. I get to come up with new ideas and showcase the awesome work all the committees produce. The committee lead gives me so much creative freedom and has trust in my abilities, which motivates me to continue to do my best.
What advice do you have for anyone considering volunteering (with KIDS or elsewhere)?
If you are someone like me who is beginning a new chapter in their life and is discovering who you are as a person, then I would highly recommend volunteering for KIDS or any other organization whose mission/vision aligns with important things you also believe in. KIDS Initiative does an amazing job at letting their volunteers control how much time and what responsibilities they have to commit to and ensures that their volunteers enjoy the work they are doing. KIDS Initiative allowed me to feel a sense of purpose and I would highly recommend anyone to join this awesome team.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be Hawaii. The weather, nature, culture and amazing food there is something I’d love to experience on a day to day basis.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi, hands down my favourite food ever. I could have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In ten years I hope to be doing something I love, that makes a difference in this world. I have no idea what that entails, I could be starting my own business or working for a company that changes lives. However, what I do know is that I am someone whose motivation derives from passion, and making an impact on others is a strong passion of mine.
